Egyptian tapestry

I believe this tapestry comes from Egypt. I could say I inherited it from Michelle, my friend’s mother. She was a History teacher and traveled her whole life. She was also a very kind and attentive person, and a woman with values and principles. I loved her a lot. She left a lot of objects from her travels, and her children wanted the people who had loved her to keep souvenirs.
This tapestry is not a Wissa Wassef one, but it’s charming, colors are gorgeous, and no fish looks like another one.

Cette tapisserie, que je pense égyptienne, me vient de Michelle, la mère d’une amie. J’aimais beaucoup cette femme, je l’admirais et l’estimais aussi. Ses enfants ont souhaité que ceux qui l’aimaient gardent quelques uns des objets rapportés de ses nombreux voyages.
Ce tapis n’est pas un Wissa Wassef, mais il en a le charme, ses couleurs sont très belles, et tous les poissons sont différents.

Four people sampling

Finally not so quick and easy…. i’m using yarns I don’t know about yet, so I have to sample to see how they behave. Then, I’ve never worked at 6 epi, I have to test each kind of yarn and decide how many threads I need. The yarn I choose for one of the the main colors is not the right one : it’s a knitting yarn, very soft and elastic, it won’t work. I found quite the same color at Weaversbazar, but I will have to wait for my order to arrive! The blue was not easy too, I hesitated a lot between different balls, and came back to my Aubusson stack. Anyway, the time I’m spending with the yarn now allows me to think over my design. There will be large areas of colors, and I’m not sure of how I will animate these surfaces. Packing gives me time to think about it too, and I love to have my mind full of creative thoughts.

Finalement, pas si simple….Je vais travailler avec des laines que je ne connais pas, il me faut donc faire des échantillons pour voir comment elles se comportent, et combien de fils pour chacune d’elles. En plus, une de mes couleurs principales est une laine à tricoter, toute molle et élastique, ça va pas le faire. J’ai commandé presque la même couleur chez Weaversbazar, mais il faut que je l’attende! Pareil pour le bleu, l’autre couleur principale, j’ai tourné autour de plusieurs autour de plusieurs pelotes, pour revenir à deux écheveaux trouvés à Aubusson. Pendant que je m’occupe de la laine, ça me donne le temps de réfléchir à mon dessin, qui a de larges surfaces unicolores, que je ne sais pas encore comment animer. Faire des cartons aussi me laisse le temps d’y penser, Et ça me fait plaisir d’avoir la tête prise par des problèmes créatifs.

Four people

I’m beginning a new project, 6 epi, rather simple, just for fun, but I was too short on warp, and I have to wait for my order to arrive!

J’ai commencé un nouveau projet, assez simple, pour m’amuser, mais j’ai pas assez de coton pour ma chaîne! Je dois attendre ma commande….

Packing kelims

I’m moving in a few months, and beginning to pack. It allows me to have a look at some of my kelims that aren’t on display. I don’t particularly the design and colors of this one, but I’m fascinated by the weaving and the knots. It may be 60 to 100 years old, I believe from Turkey.

Je déménage dans quelques mois, et je commence empaqueter. Je redécouvre ceux de mes kilims confinés dans une boîte. Je n’adore ni les motifs ni les couleurs de celui-ci, mais je reste fascinée par le tissage et le tressage. Je pense qu’il vient de Turquie, il a entre 60 et 100 ans à mon avis.

Japanese print

I bought this print in Guadeloupe in the only antiquarian in Basse-Terre, his shop doesn’t exist anymore, it was thirty years ago. The print was cut at some point, a part of it is missing on the left. I don’t know what it is, if it is old or new, and what is written inside the cartouches. But the colors are gorgeous, and the texture of the paper is splendid.

J’ai trouvé cette estampe chez le seul antiquaire de Basse-Terre il y a trente ans, sa boutique a disparu depuis. . Aucune idée de son pedigree ni de son ancienneté, mais les couleurs sont superbes et la texture du papier extraordinaire.

Jon’s doodles

My friend Jon is like me a new tapestry weaver. He’s also a painter, and likes to draw colorful doodles. From one of them, he wove his first big tapestry, on a Zeus Mirrix loom. As he also was a scientist in a previous life, look at how cleverly he stored his bobbins.

Jon, mon mai américain, est comme moi un nouveau passionné de tapisserie. Comme il est aussi peintre et qu’il adore dessiner des crobards pleins de couleurs, il s’est servi de l’un d’entre eux comme carton. En bon scientifique, il a trouvé une solution pratique pour ranger ses bobines.

Challenges

In the piece I’m weaving, The Yellow lady, there’s a lot of vertical lines. This time I didn’t go for joints and interlocks, I decided to weave the slits as I was weaving, with a linen thread joining the warp. You can see the threads hanging everywhere. It means that I have to be very careful of not drawing in or out, and in sewing the slits in the front. I hope it will work, I can’t see the front very well with my Mirrix.

Dans ma tapisserie en cours, ma Yellow lady, il y a beaucoup de lignes verticales. J’ai décidé de ne pas faire de liures, mais de coudre les morceaux bord à bord, avec un fil de lin qui passe sur la chaine. Il se voit qui pendouille sur les photos. Ça oblige à tisser super droit, j’ai dû quelquefois défaire et recommencer. J’espère que ça donnera ce que je veux sur l’endroit, j’ai du mal à voir avec le Mirrix.

Tapestry workshop

I spent the weekend weaving with Laurence, in her studio in Saint-Thibault-les-vignes, 30kms from Paris. Laurence was trained in Aubusson, worked in studios in Angers, and is a skilled tapestry weaver. The weekend was great, I learned a lot, and I’m ready to use these new skills in my next tapestries.
